Get your Tiki on at the Asbury Park Surf Music Fest!

By Jenny Vickers

I've been obsessed with MESSER CHUPS since the first time I heard their song "Sex Euro and Evils Pop" and I still can't believe they are coming all the way from St. Petersburg, Russia to play in Asbury Park as part of their first ever U.S. Tour!

Thanks to the amazing folks at Asbury Park Surf Music Festival, you can catch them and many other awesome surf bands at The Anchor's Bend on Saturday, August 27th! You'll have heaps of fun with your friends on the beach enjoying live surf music, tiki drinks, classic cars and amazing ocean views! Grab your tickets at bit.ly/apsmf16tix.

"We are excited to create a day of retro-inspired fun in the sun - reverb-drenched surf music, tropical drinks, classic cars, local vendors and great food - all in our favorite place on earth, The Anchor’s Bend on Asbury Park Beach!" said Magdalena O'Connell, co-founder of the Asbury Park Surf Music Fest.

I was very honored when the Asbury Park Music Fest asked the Asbury Park Bazaar to co-sponsor the festival's vendor market. Working together, we created an amazing roster of local vendors that will be selling handmade goods in the Grand Arcade of Convention Hall during the fest.

"With the help of Asbury Park Bazaar, we have a really great collection of local vendors," said O'Connell. "Festival sponsor Asbury Park Moto Club will have a selection of apparel, moto and adventure accessories on display as well as some vintage bikes! Little Dickman Records will be there selling their awesome catalog of surf, garage & psych records. Groovy Graveyard returns with vintage vinyl, movie memorabilia, comics and more. They will also be selling official APSMF posters and T’s at their booth. We also have vendors selling jewelry, candles, soap, hot sauce, and other handmade goods. We can’t wait to do some shopping ourselves!"

I was able to catch up with a couple of vendors to find out what they will be selling during the event, what their favorite Tiki drink is and what band they were most excited to hear!

Light a Helmsman Candle Co. candle and you'll feel like you're sailing on a boat far out at sea or collecting pieces of driftwood on the beach at sunset. That's because owner/creator Robert Gilanyi has taken his love affair of the ocean to create one-of-a-kind handmade soy candles in vintage tins and custom designed glass.

"Growing up two blocks from the beach here in New Jersey I was exposed to a beach life style from an early age," said Gilyani. "My family's love for the ocean was the beginning of a life long love affair with everything nautical for me. So I launched Helmsman Candle Company where we use all natural organic products but with an ocean lovers aesthetic."

Featuring fragrances such as Nag Champa, Driftwood, and Ocean Breeze, Gilyani's latest products include his 6 SERIES, a curated limited edition batch where he produces only 6 of each design.

"It’s as Helen Keller said 'Smell is a potent wizard that transports you across thousands of miles and all the years of your life;' this concept is the reason I started making candles and is something I hope translates to people who burn them," said Gilyani. "Our fragrances bring you to another place, one with fond memories of time at the beach with a calm summer breeze, times you can cherish forever."

While Gilyani doesn't partake in Tiki drinks, he is excited to see The Black Flamingos. "I just love their sound." So be sure to stop by the surf fest to pick up your very own Helmsman limited edition soy candle before they're all gone!

Velvet and Slate was created for the free spirited mind,  the bohemian soul and the youthful heart. Each piece is hand crafted with special attention paid to the finishing details. The feathers are real, and each is unique and organic in nature, making every piece of jewelry one of a kind.

Designer/Owner Karisa Perrone will be selling a new collection of handmade jewelry. "This season I have focused on expanding into new materials such as leather, suede, metals, novelty chains and stones," said Perrone. "I'll also have some of her feather, tassels and fringe pieces."

Karisa's favorite Tiki drinks are Painkillers and Piña Coladas. "It's always a good time if I have either of these in hand!" said Perrone. "No matter where I am when drinking them, they always bring me back to a tropical memory, warm sunshine and good times."

Karisa is also excited to see local favorites The Black Flamingos. "I always have a great time at their shows! But I'm really excited to hear all of the bands."

Be sure to stop by the Velvet and Slate booth to purchase pieces from her latest collection and visit all of the amazing vendors in the arcade before heading out to the beach for tiki drinks and good music in the sand.

"Joe Chyb at Slow Roar and The Anchor’s Bend crew have been so awesome in helping us bring our ideas to life," said O'Connell. "It’s going to be quite a party! Aloha attire is encouraged, and be sure to grab a hair flower on your way in, courtesy of Lady Luck Brand."
